Create your own generative artwork in Processing and turn it into an original two-colour silkscreen art print. Digital to phyisical!
Saturday April 6th
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
In this two part workshop we'll create code-generated artwork in Processing and bring it to life in the form of a two-colour silkscreen art print. Handmade code translated to handmade prints and a one-of-a-kind piece of art. It's a unique chance to create something that is both digital and physical.
In the morning, at the Assemble gallery, we'll cover everything you need to create artwork on screen including some starter code to get you rolling. Then we'll cover the process of exporting it from Processing to tweak and preparing it for the printing process in Illustrator.
In the afternoon, we'll reconvene at Commonwealth Press where everyone will print a short run of their creations by hand. We'll walk you through the entire printing process along the way from burning screens and mixing ink to getting the ink on paper.
Materials & Details
- All paper, ink, printing supplies and studio time are included in the ticket price.
- You may want to bring a smock for printing, it can get messy.
- You will have to bring your own laptop.
Requirements
- No printing experience is required!
- Some programming experience (in any language) will be helpful for this workshop
- A copy of Illustrator (trial version is fine) and a working knowledge of editing paths with it
- The latest version of Processing installed on your laptop
Class limited to a maximum of 6 people. A list of optional supplies along with directions to both venues and download links will be sent to all attendees a few days before the first class. We've got you covered :)

Val is totally into design, type and code. She is an independent designer and consultant who wants to see the internet stay as awesome as possible. Sometimes she puts pixels aside to draw letters and screen print, sew LEDs into things, or send lots of mail. She speaks internationally at conferences about design and interaction. She also co-organizes Web Design Day, in Pittsburgh and a local creative coding meet up, Loop Pittsburgh. She tweets too much at @vlh and blogs almost enough at valhead.com
